The Girl Generation to Host End FGM Communication Training in Dakar, Senegal

For one week starting  15th – 20th, May 2017, The Girl Generation will host the first regional social change communications training for 65 strategically positioned NGOs, activists, youth networks, religious leaders in West Africa –  from Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and The Gambia. The training is aimed at supporting grassroots organisations to strengthen their social change communications to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), through the development of locally-owned strategies, informed by national priorities, to address local contexts and needs – and doing so by leveraging a Do No Harm approach to effectively and sensitively communicate about FGM in their local contexts.

The percentage of girls and women aged 15 to 49 years, who have undergone FGM,varies between the four countries: 25% in Senegal, 75% in The Gambia, 76% in Burkina Faso, 89% Mali. The training is aimed at raising awareness about FGM in order to grow the Africa-led movement to end FGM – a harmful traditional practice. To change the discourse and challenge long held ideas on how to communicate about FGM. Attendees will gain specific communication skills to help inform their work on ending FGM, from campaigning to community engagement. The training will include sessions on violence against women and girls, social and behaviour change communication, and social media as a tool for social change.

About The Girl Generation

We are a social change communication initiative, an Africa-led global collective of members and partners brought together by a shared vision that FGM can – and must – end in this generation. In doing so, we promote the use social change communication to influence a change in the social norms that underpin FGM. We believe in a world where no woman or girl suffers from FGM.
